for the last three years, our government has really been on both the pressure point and i think now realizing a tremendous opportunity to allow our data to go out. why not also in return ask for companies who are also collecting data to share that with city government? that's another great exchange that we have. and i know there's a lot of companies out there that do collect a lot of data, whether they're your credit card companies, your banks and so forth. if there is a way that their data can come to us, it might very well be the grounds for even better public service for all of our different departments, whether we're talking about health or sports or kinds of things that our public would use. and i want to serve up an example. there's been a company here in san francisco called motion loft and they have been creating sensors in various departments. they've covered some 18 different neighborhoods in our city with thousands of different sensors to track pedestrians, vehicles, maybe later on they'll tag bicycle traffic. and that data in the various neighborhoods have, i think, been

it was a company that created technology to connect citizens better with government * . i ran it for almost nine years. and when i was elected to office four years ago, i was unfortunately more surprised than i wanted to be about how far behind san francisco government was. this was very 2008, 2009. with you i'm really proud of the leaps and bounds we have taken as a city * . i was proud in 2010 to help move forward legislation to really bring together city departments to work in a coordinated way with our committee on information technology. to help create a chief information officer position for the city. i was also proud to work with then mayor newsome in passing the first generation of open data legislation that we have. but as our civil grand jury in june pointed out, our i-t in san francisco is still in need of a culture shock. and this is where all of us come in today. we have 200 data sets that have already been put out there, but by and large the data sets put out by city government are data sets that i think show us in a very positive way. from my perspective,

there are federal regulations that govern us on the senior side but maybe non-low income young people should pay full fare. maybe seniors should pay closer to whatever the federal maximum is. i think it's 50%, that can afford it, whereas other seniors who can't maybe they should ride for free or reduced fare. we're trying to look at it more holistically. we're taking it, although i get there are people who believe and want this to continue once it starts, we're taking this seriously as a pilot and we will be evaluating its impacts on a number of different fronts to determine whether we think it's achieving importa not, that will give us some basis to have that discussion when it's coming to a close, next budget cycle. and then in terms of resources to continue it, should that be the desire of the mta board, you know, there are folks who will probably come up and speak who will say that they have committed to working with us to identify funding sources. there's been discussion of trying to identify some non-city, non-transportation funding sources. but ultimately i think you're right.

i do think things are changing at city hall and with city government generally. in the last budget process, we read able to get a full-time person in the office of economic and workforce development who will focus exclusively on nightlife and entertainment. that is a huge step with the positives of the industry. i would have worked very closely with supervisor chiu to get a budget for the entertainment commission. at times, the entertainment commission has been set up to fail because we expect all sorts of enforcement and make sure that people are cracking down on the rules, but we have not committed the resources necessary to do so. we are slowly doing that to make sure that they can meet their mission. and the of all special use district that i mentioned before, i think we lost -- we will finally start seeing some reform there. we have a lot more work to do. i recently asked the economist to supplement the impact study for the night live with a similar study for outdoor fairs and festivals, which we know contribute mightily to our economy. i'm very committed to
